Dr. John Spoede

I believe life is a journey—and no one should have to walk it alone. My heart as a counselor is to come alongside individuals, couples, and families, helping them navigate the twists and turns of life while moving toward the healthiest, most fulfilling, and Christ-centered path possible. I use a variety of approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy and client-centered techniques, but my goal is always the same: to meet people where they are and help them move forward with strength and hope.
Over the years, I’ve worked with children, teens, and adults on a wide range of issues including addiction, anxiety, depression, marital struggles, parenting challenges, and stress. I’ve also spent significant time walking with individuals and families through grief, loss, trauma, and the pain of suicide. My specialties include working with adolescents, families, and adults, and I primarily see clients ages eight and older.
My professional journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to both education and ministry. I hold a B.A. from Baylor, an M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Houston-Victoria, and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Individual Differences from the University of Houston, along with a Doctor of Ministry. I am licensed as an LPC-S, LCDC, CSC, and NCC. Beyond my private practice, I spent more than a decade in public schools serving students in special education and emotional disturbance, and I’ve also worked in residential treatment with teens. Alongside this, I’ve served as a licensed and ordained minister for more than twenty years.
My advanced training includes SYMBIS, Gottman Method work, and Prepare/Enrich certification. I often draw from CBT, ACT, and creative/play-based methods to customize therapy for each client. Whether we’re tackling addiction, marital conflict, depression, anger, or spiritual struggles, my approach is holistic and relational—because real change happens when therapy fits the unique person sitting across from me.
Katy has been home to me for most of my life. My wife, Angela, and I met at Katy High School, and together we’ve raised three wonderful children. Outside of counseling, I love investing in my family, my church, and my community.
